End of 2012

I'm not especially in Christmas spirit or celebrating the coming new year this moment. On the contrary, I would say I had seen better days. This year was tough, both in work and in personal life. Anyway we survived and keep on walking. Thanks to my family and all the friends near or far. Have a nice holiday season and wish everyone a better next year.

Summer 3 Years Birthday

IMG_20120704_215418

My daughter's 3-year-old birthday with her pink heart-shaped cake. They were singing "Happy Beard to You" instead of normal "Happy Birthday to You", which is kind of our new family tradition now.

Three Years Old

Today I'm three years old! I will get a pink heart-shaped birthday cake tonight, as I asked in April.

This big one is trying to break into our living room...

By the way, at the same time there is a wasp already dashing in the living room. Happy Dragon Boat Festival!

China Bus Driver Who Saved 24 Lives

This is touching. Unbelievable brave man. The bus driver was hit by a massive metal while driving on a highway. He suffered severe injury in his liver, ribs, lungs and other internal organs, which eventually killed him. However, he managed to safely and stably pulled over to the side of the highway. He even reminded the passengers the bus was still on the highway so do not walk outside. In the interview, some passengers said they didn't know the driver was hurt because the bus was so stable. He died at 48 after three days in ICU. You can only tell what a man is made of when he is in danger. I feel so sorry for him and his family. R.I.P.

My Son's Show Night

This evening my son called me when I was still in the office. He asked me to go home earlier because he and his sister has a show to perform. Later on he called again to remind me to drink water and go to the bathroom at 7:30pm because when the show begins at 8pm I will not have time to do so.

I arrived home to discover that it was not just a small event. It was huge. He prepared a theater in the study with seats all lined up, a small stage made by building blocks which he can stand on, and all gadgets he needs in his programs. He even prepared tickets for each one, with hand-writing Chinese characters he probably asked my mom to write for him to look when he drew.

Tickets
He asked me and my daughter to sit on the seats and began to perform. The show includes lighting, magic, and drawing on a canvas, with many different lighting and tools. He was thoughtful enough to invite audiences to go on stage to assist his performance. In one of the program he asked his sister to stand in a circle, then quickly took her to another room to hide while asking the audience to close their eyes so that when the audience open their eyes a few seconds later the assistant was disappeared. :) It was really a great show. I enjoyed a lot!
Lighting show
I was inspired by his program, so we went to the room to play with the flashlight and camera to draw in the air. This night was the best night ever.

Amazing Lin!

Recently I'm totally overwhelmed by Jeremy Lin, along with other millions of sudden fans around the world. Everybody know his story well by now. What happens in the past two weeks is even more unbelievable than Hollywood movies -- but it is truly happening. To some religious people, his performance is a proof of the existence of God.

Back to Taiwan, some so-called "professional" basketball players looked down on him when he visited Taiwan. Some debating if he is a "proud of Taiwan", because he was born and educated in USA despite his Taiwanese parents. I think he is just himself. What he has accomplished is a result of his hard-work and family support that we should respect a lot, and a lot of good luck he relates to higher mighty power. Taiwan has nothing to do with his success, however, it is also nothing wrong to feel related to him and be proud of him as many Asian-Americans or Asian-Canadians do. After all, he is indeed a direct Taiwanese decent raised by Taiwanese immigrant parents. He has gone through all stereotypes or even discrimination that other Asians faced. Luckily he has good parents with decent economical position to support him with good education -- not many people can choose Havard when they don't get a scholarship for college.

A Day in Jeremy Lin's Life

Watch how a champion is trained every day. If you learn that he has to keep on doing this every day even when no team wants him, it's not a surprise to see his performance now. I once read that Michael Jordan practiced 8 hours a day even with that talent.

The Jeremy Lin Show!

Today Jeremy Lin of New York Knicks broke his career record again, in his first career start in NBA. 28 points, 8 assists, 2 steals. It is not exaggerating to say that he saved the Knicks alone in the past two games. The official site of Knicks sent an mail to fans with one word: "Linsanity." He just did it in last game on Saturday off the bench to score 25 and assisted 7 times. Praise to this Taiwanese boy!

Tsinghua University

Untitled, originally uploaded by rwcutter.

Learned a lot about my school today when editing photos taken in Tsinghua University. The campus is huge, with many historical buildings. It felt like walking in Stanford. I felt emotional being there, because we are the same school separated by civil war, and finally see each other again after its 100-year birthday. Except the name, I didn't know the two school had so many things still the same. Thanks to Wikipedia.

2012 New Year

Smoky beginning of the year

2012 New Year, a set on Flickr.
Happy New Year to all! As usual, we watched the Taipei 101 fireworks from our window. Due to the weather, it was especially smoky this year. You could actually see a huge cluster of smoke slowly moving outward, and it continued to grow instead of being blown away by wind. Anyway, you can always find better videos or photos online, but there's only one place to let my two little kids watch the fireworks in a warm room and then go to sleep in minutes, for free.
